After all, you’re getting to know someone new (who you also think is cute). So when you have the right attitude, along with a list of the best things to talk about on a first date, your anxiety levels have no choice but take a back seat. Wondering what those ‘best things’ are? Well, basically they’re simple yet insightful questions that help you to connect with your date without coming across as a police interrogator.
1. Where’s home?
So simple yet so essential. It helps you understand the background of your date and gives you insight on how they grew up and where they see as home now. Speaking about home also naturally leads to other topics, such as family, school and culture.
2. Who are you closest to in your family?
This question will tell you information about their family background, their upbringing, and could be a great way to establish intimacy.
3. If you could travel anywhere, where would you go?
Depending on the answer, you’ve got yourself a hermit or someone who’s a wild adventurer a la Jacques Cousteau, or someone right dab in the middle. It will tell you a lot about them, and perhaps you discover you both have the same destination on your wanderlust list!
4. What’s your favorite TV show right now?
Pretty standard question but also equally important. Are they into sci-fi? Do they shun Schitt’s Creek? Do they only watch sports? You’ll get an instant insight into how your interests match and whether or not Netflix and Chill will actually be a thing between you.
5. What is your favorite way to spend a weekend?
Are they a weekend warrior or are they a Lazy Sunday devotee? Knowing how they like to spend their free time will give you a better sense of their interests and whether or not your weekends will mesh or not.
6. What’s the scariest thing you’ve ever done?
Again, this is a great question to help you better understand who this person is. Does giving a speech in front of five people give them intense anxiety or did they jump out of an airplane on their last birthday?
7. What are your favorite hobbies?
Hobbies reflect someone’s values, as well as their level of intensity. As in, are they a knitter or are they a rock climber? There’s a big difference between the two and it helps to know where you fit in with that. Remember to keep an open mind though – there are many different ways of establishing a connection beyond hobbies.
8. What’s your motto in life?
Remember: a first date is about figuring out whether you’re compatible or not. This question helps gauge your compatibility on values to determine whether or not there’s a possible future between you two. Your perspectives don’t need to be exactly the same, but it does help to agree with each other’s values.
9. What are you really passionate about in life?
If you’re someone who’s passionate about life, then you need someone who’s equally passionate. Plus, knowing what someone is most devoted to in life will tell you a lot about that person as well as where they spend most of their energy. Do your passions and energy levels sync up?
